Escape Room Games: The concept
“An Escape Room is a live, team-based adventurous experience wherein a team tries to achieve a certain objective in 60 minutes (usually) by solving puzzles using the clues and hints that they have.”
Imagine you and your friends walk into a small, dark room. The door shuts behind you, and you can hear the soft click of the lock. One of your friends stumbles into you. Another one is already laughing hysterically. All you can see is the clock on the wall—big red numbers counting down. 59:59, 59:58, 59:57…
Welcome! You’ve just embarked on an awesome adventure—one of Long Island’s very own Escape Rooms. My name is Brittney, and I’m one of the many game masters at Escape the Room Games LI. Game masters are there to help you along your epic journey, to give you a push in the right direction when you get stuck. Think of us as your friendly neighborhood Dumbledores and Yodas. If you need us, we’ll be there watching you on camera—like a less creepy version of Jigsaw.
How did Escape Rooms Originate?
Escape rooms come in all shapes and sizes, and you can find them all over the world. The concept started in Japan—a real-life extrapolation of escape room video games. Escape rooms make up some of the most popular games online and in app stores. Some are epic adventure games, while others might seem more mundane. It’s amazing how gamers can make a successful pastime of finding a way out of a locked bathroom. I don’t know if I ever finished that level actually…
If you don’t have any experience with video games, don’t worry. I am objectively terrible at finding my way out of the virtual rooms on my phone. The point of real life escape rooms is take things to the next level—to take away the mouse or the touch screen and allow you to live the experience.
Escape Rooms are an adventurous experience
But why?” you ask. “Why would anyone want the experience of being locked in a room?”
The short answer is that it’s something to do. The long answer is that it’s an adventure.
We live in the era of the action-adventure film. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be the twelfth person in an Ocean’s Eleven heist? Or whether or not you would be able to MacGyver your way out of a bomb threat? What would you do if you were standing next to Indiana Jones with a boulder tumbling your way? If you were miles beneath Hogwarts and Voldemort was about to get the Sorcerer’s Stone, would you be able to stop him?
These are the reasons I find I love escape rooms. They’re tests of intelligence and creativity, of daring and wit. I can take a step away from looking at my loan payments and bills, and instead I can look for clues in an Aztec temple or escape a jail where I’ve been wrongly imprisoned. I can be the heroes I read about in books and watched on television. I can go on that adventure myself instead of watching someone else do it for a change.
Also, on a personal note, escape rooms hurt a lot less than amateur archery.
So we welcome you to join us on an adventure. Escape a killer’s cabin, avoid getting trapped in space, plan an elaborate prison break, or journey deep into the temple in search of gold. Whichever path you choose, we’ll be there to help you along the way.
